Committee Mission Statement

We believe that education needs to be rooted in decolonized and liberative principles. The education committee seeks to sponsor high-caliber and timely educative presentations to increase competency, provoke critical consciousness, and challenge oppressive practices. We offer continuing education opportunities which are accessible and further the embodiment of ethical clinical practice. We support counselors in developing cultural humility and strategies to reduce suffering. WMHCA and the committee actively seek to recruit presenters with diverse and intersectional identities, philosophies, and content.

  • Secure digital certificates and renewal notices (no more paper mailings)

  • Streamlined tools for managing your professional credential

Where to Renew: Log in through your Secure Access Washington (SAW) account and add the HELMS service to manage your license.

To Make the Transition Easier: the Professional Development & Education Committee created a step-by-step How to Create Your HELMS Account guide.

    Description

    Most therapists and counselors didn't go into their field to manage finances. Yet running a practice requires understanding the numbers that keep your business healthy. This workshop simplifies financial management for practice owners who don't consider themselves "numbers people." You'll learn what financial data actually matters for your practice, how to set up systems that work, what it means to truly get paid for your work, and why neglecting these fundamentals costs you in the long run. By the end, you'll know exactly what to track and why it matters to your bottom line.

    Learning Objectives

    By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
    • Identify the key financial metrics and data points that matter most for their practice
    • Understand the difference between bookkeeping and accounting and why both matter
    • Recognize the hidden costs of not getting paid properly (insurance delays, uncollected invoices, underpricing)
    • Create a realistic revenue plan based on their practice capacity and pricing
    • Understand how neglecting financial management impacts cash flow, profitability, and business sustainability
    • Implement simple tracking systems to stay on top of their numbers without overwhelm.

    There are no CEs for this event.

        Description:

        The rapid expansion of telehealth has created new opportunities for behavioral health clinicians to provide services across geographic boundaries, but it has also created increasingly complex legal and ethical challenges. When the clinician and client are in different jurisdictions (states or countries), many significant considerations must be addressed. These include issues such as legal jurisdiction, licensure requirements, compliance with state laws, insurance coverage, third-party reimbursement, and professional liability standards.

        In this workshop, we will examine the legal and ethical standards governing cross-jurisdictional behavioral health practice, with particular attention to the interstate licensure compacts. Through practical examples and case scenarios, we will explore how current and developing state laws and licensing requirements can affect clinical practice and we will identify strategies for determining when and how services may legally and ethically be provided across state lines.

        Objectives:

        Participants will be able to:

        • Identify jurisdictional and licensure requirements that apply when clinicians or clients are physically located in different states;
        • Apply relevant legal and ethical standards when providing behavioral health services across state lines;
        • Recognize legal, ethical, insurance, and reimbursement risks associated with cross-state clinical practice; and
        • Develop strategies for evaluating and addressing cross-jurisdiction practice issues, including temporary client travel, clinician relocation, international telehealth, and interstate practice authorization.

              Description:

              Carla Titus walks through what goes into a Financial Treatment Plan and how it transforms the way you run your practice.

              Most practice owners make hiring, compensation, and growth decisions without a clear financial picture. They're scaling based on gut feel, not strategy. A Strategic Financial Plan changes that completely.

              You’ll learn:
              • What a Strategic Financial Plan actually includes and why each piece matters
              • How it directly impacts your hiring, compensation, and growth decisions

              • Why practice owners with a plan scale faster and more sustainably

              • The real cost of scaling without a financial strategy

              • How to know if your practice is ready for one

              Whether you’re feeling the pressure to reward your team or just want a more intentional approach to compensation, this session will help you make smart, sustainable decisions.
