Continuing Education Approval Requests

There are two options for submitting workshop proposals.  If you would like WMHCA to approve your workshop and you present it on your own then submit the continuing education application.  If you would like to present a workshop hosted by WMHCA please fill out the Professional Development for WMHCA.

Professional Development for WMHCA

  • WMHCA accepts most topics for professional development. 
  • WMHCA's current focus is listed below, however we always accept all topics for consideration.  
  • If accepted current submissions are scheduled 3 to 9 months out.
  • Presenters sign a contract.  You can view it HERE.
  • WMHCA compensates our presenters.

Health Equity Professional Development

Please review the requirements in this link to the WA DOH and consider submitting a proposal. Workshops must be a minimum of 2 credit hours to meet the requirement for healthcare professionals.

In addition, proposals must include implicit bias training to identify strategies to reduce bias during assessment and diagnosis and must include at least one additional area:

  • Instruction on skills to address the structural factors, such as bias, racism, and poverty, that manifest as health inequities.

  • Self-reflection to assess how the licensee's social position can influence their relationship with clients and their communities. 

  • Strategies for recognizing patterns of health care disparities on an individual, institutional, and structural level and eliminating factors that influence them.

  • Intercultural communication skills training, including how to work effectively with an interpreter and how communication styles differ across cultures.

Trainers must have demonstrated knowledge and experience related to health equity. Research must be based on current empirical research and known best practices.


Proposals will remain open on a continuous basis and reviewed upon receipt.

Health Equity Training Standards Summary

As of January 1, 2024 all providers licensed under Title 18 must take two (2) continuing education credits of health equity training every four (4) years.  This includes associates.

 

The training must:

  • Include implicit bias training to identify strategies to reduce bias during assessment and diagnosis and may include, but is not limited to, at least one of the topics below

  • Instruction on skills to address the structural factors, such as bias, racism, and poverty, that manifest as health inequities.

  • Self-reflection to assess how the licensee's social position can influence their relationship with clients and their communities.

  • Strategies for recognizing patterns of health care disparities on an individual, institutional, and structural level and eliminating factors that influence them.

  • Intercultural communication skills training, including how to work effectively with an interpreter and how communication styles differ across cultures.

  • Have trainers with demonstrated knowledge and experience related to health equity. Research referenced in the training must be based on current empirical research and known best practices.

  • The courses must assess the licensee's ability to apply health equity concepts into practice

  • An assessment at the end of an in-person or virtual continuing education training to determine knowledge gained during that training or

  • A document provided at the end of an in-person or virtual continuing education training that attests to attendance at the training.


Other topics that meet the requirements are:

  • Methods for addressing the emotional well-being of children and youth of diverse backgrounds.

  • Ensuring equity and anti-racism in care delivery pertaining to medical developments and emerging therapies.

  • Structural competency training addressing five core competencies:

  • Recognizing the structures that shape clinical interactions.

  • Developing an extra-clinical language of structure.

  • Re-articulating "cultural" formulations in structural terms.

  • Observing and imagining structural interventions; and

  • Developing structural humility.

  • Cultural safety training.

Addressing Burnout and Other Occupational Challenges

As dedicated mental health professionals, WMHCA recognizes occupational stress's profound impact on clinicians’ well-being and effectiveness as counselors.

WMHCA is looking for professional development proposals for workshops addressing the critical challenges of occupational stress. Topics can include:

  • Burnout
  • Compassion Fatigue
  • Secondary Traumatic Stress
  • Vicarious Trauma
  • Depersonalization
  • Workaholism

WMHCA invites counselors, therapists, and mental health practitioners from various backgrounds and specialties to submit workshop proposals that offer strategies, insights, and solutions for managing and overcoming occupational stressors. Workshops that provide practical tools, innovative techniques, and personal experiences that can help enhance resilience, self-care, and professional satisfaction are of particular interest.

Proposals may include, but are not limited to:

  • Personal stories and reflections on overcoming burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Evidence-based practices and self-care strategies
  • Innovative approaches to maintaining professional boundaries and emotional well-being
  • Case studies demonstrating effective management of burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Interactive exercises or tools for building resilience

WMHCA encourages submissions that embrace inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability to diverse client needs and practitioner experiences. By sharing knowledge and strategies, we aim to foster a supportive community where counselors can find inspiration and practical solutions to sustain their passion and effectiveness in their work.

These events will provide a valuable platform for sharing expertise and strengthening the sense of community among mental health professionals. They will also address these challenges and support one another in our shared commitment to mental health and well-being.
