Description:

One of the risks of being a counselor is that clients may file  complaints about you to the Department of Health (DOH) for “unprofessional conduct. Whether the complaint has basis or not, it may be investigated. This webinar will help to orient participants to the basics of the DOH complaint process, laws, and decisions that affect clinical practice.

In this 3-hour interactive webinar, presenter Frances Schopick will help attendees recognize common, sometimes seemingly benign, dynamics that can result in Licensing Board complaints. Fran’s past experience as a therapist, family law attorney, and reunification counselor gives her unique insight into circumstances common to the therapeutic model that may inadvertently result in Board complaint. We will also look at laws, regulations, and ethics codes that can play a part in the decisions you make. Once understood, attendees may apply lessons learned in this webinar to their own practices so that they can successfully manage risk going forward.

Attendees are invited to engage in group discussion and ask questions throughout.

This webinar is designed to meet requirements for Ethics and Law.

Objectives:

1. Attendees will identify at least three types of dynamics that may lead to DOH complaints.

2. Attendees will be able to identify three practices that can mitigate risk of DOH complaint.

3. Attendees will understand ways to remain within scope of clinical practice.
