This training is designed for mental health clinicians seeking to enhance their understanding of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and their role in supporting children with diverse learning and developmental needs. Participants will gain foundational knowledge about what IEPs are, who they serve, and the legal protections they provide under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Special attention will be given to how families of color navigate special educational services and advocacy within the school system.
Clinicians will learn how to interpret psychological and educational testing results included in IEPs, identify key components of these plans, and evaluate their appropriateness for children and families they support. Additionally, this training will equip mental health providers with strategies to collaborate effectively with families, educators, and school teams to ensure that IEPs align with a child’s therapeutic and developmental goals.
By the end of this training, participants will:
Understand the purpose and legal framework of IEPs.
Identify the populations eligible for IEPs and the protections they afford.
Develop skills to interpret IEP testing and reports.
Learn how to guide families in determining the necessity of an IEP for their child.
Integrate IEP goals into clinical treatment planning for more holistic care.
Strengthen advocacy skills to support families in navigating the special education system.
This training is essential for therapists, social workers, and other mental health professionals working with children and families, providing them with the tools to bridge the gap between mental health and education for more effective, systemically informed care.
