Following completion of the 15-hour Becoming a Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisor training, supervisor candidates may continue their professional development through this intensive, one-day applied clinical supervision experience.

Under the mentoring supervision of Kim McBride, Ph.D., LMFT, and Colin C. Ward, Ph.D., LMHC, participants will have the opportunity to apply newly acquired supervisory knowledge and evidence-informed practices while working with supervisee associates who are completing Washington State-required postgraduate supervised clinical experience in preparation for independent practice.

Unlike the two-day supervisor knowledge training, this course is entirely experiential and includes no lecture component. Supervisor candidates will actively practice clinical supervision throughout the training day, receiving observation, feedback, consultation, and guidance from Drs. McBride and Ward.

Applied Supervision Experience

Working in dyads with other supervisor candidates, participants will practice how to:

• Establish effective supervisory relationships that foster supervisee growth, accountability, and professional identity.
• Present and implement Supervision Agreements that clearly define expectations, evaluation procedures, and supervisory responsibilities.
• Structure individual, triadic, and group supervision using evidence-informed supervisory practices.
• Utilize effective methods for observation, documentation, feedback, and evaluation of supervisee competence and professional development.
• Apply culturally responsive supervision practices that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural humility, and health equity.
• Recognize and appropriately respond to supervisees' performance concerns, ethical issues, impairment, and gatekeeping considerations.
• Integrate best practices in documentation, recordkeeping, financial and practice management, continuity planning, and risk management consistent with Washington State supervisory requirements.

Washington State Applied Supervision Experience

This one-day training is designed to provide 9 hours of experience in supervision of clinical practice toward the experience requirement identified in WAC 246-809-334(4)(b) for Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisors.

Because these hours are earned through the practice of supervision, rather than classroom instruction, supervisor candidates must remain actively engaged in clinical supervision activities for the full nine instructional hours. This one-day applied training will be held from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and includes nine hours of active supervision practice, with a one-hour lunch break. Lunch is on your own, with several casual dining options conveniently located within approximately 0.3 miles of the training location.

Applied Course Requirements

To participate in the one-day Applied Clinical Supervision Training:

Prior supervisor education is required. At the time of registration, participants must provide documentation demonstrating completion of the required 15 hours of clinical supervision education.

Pre-training preparation is required. A training packet will be provided to participants approximately one week before the course. The packet includes readings and supporting materials related to the supervision competencies participants will practice during the applied training. Participants are expected to review these materials in advance so that the training day can remain fully focused on the active practice of clinical supervision.

Active participation is required. To qualify for all 9 hours of experience in supervision of clinical practice, supervisor candidates must actively participate in the practice of clinical supervision for the entire course, excluding the one-hour lunch period.

This is an applied training experience. There are no lecture components. Participants should arrive prepared to supervise, be supervised in their supervision, receive feedback, reflect on their supervisory practice, and apply that feedback throughout the training day.

Who Should Attend?

This training is intended for Washington State licensed mental health professionals who:

• Have held an unrestricted Washington State license in good standing for at least two years.
• Intend to become Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisors.
• Have completed the required 15 hours of clinical supervision education.
• Currently supervise or anticipate supervising associates pursuing licensure.
• Wish to strengthen their supervisory competence through the active practice of clinical supervision under mentoring supervision.

Participant Eligibility

• This training is intended for Washington State licensed mental health professionals seeking to become Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisors who have completed the required 15 hours of clinical supervision education.
• At the time of registration, participants must provide documentation demonstrating completion of the required 15 hours of clinical supervision education.
• Participants are responsible for reviewing Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 246-809-334 and all other applicable Washington State Department of Health requirements to verify their eligibility to become a Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisor before registering for this training.
• Completion of this training provides 9 hours of experience in supervision of clinical practice toward the experience requirement identified in WAC 246-809-334(4)(b). Completion of this training does not, by itself, confer Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisor status. Eligibility is determined by the Washington State Department of Health.

ACEP Status Approval Statement

Envision Counseling, PLLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP), ACEP No. 6724. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Envision Counseling, PLLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

 

Refund and Transfer Policy

• Due to the limited enrollment and advance preparation required for this training, registration fees are non-refundable.
• If you are unable to attend after registering, you may transfer your registration one time only to the next scheduled offering of the same Clinical Supervision Training, provided you notify Envision Counseling, PLLC in writing at least 48 hours prior to the start of training.
• The transfer is a one-time accommodation and cannot be transferred again or carried over beyond the next scheduled offering. Transfers are subject to seat availability and must be used for the next scheduled offering of the same training. If, for any reason, Envision Counseling, PLLC does not have a next scheduled offering of the Clinical Supervision Training, the registration fee will be forfeited and cannot be held or applied to a future training. Failure to attend without prior notification ("no-show") will also result in forfeiture of the registration fee.
• Envision Counseling, PLLC reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the training due to insufficient enrollment, presenter illness, or unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, registrants will be offered the option to transfer their registration to a future training date or receive a full refunds.

About the Presenters

Dr. Kim McBride and Dr. Colin C. Ward have collaborated in counselor education, clinical supervision, and professional training for more than 15 years. They first met while serving as counselor educators at Antioch University Seattle and later partnered at Envision Counseling, where they discovered a shared passion for preparing the next generation of clinical  professionals. Since 2012, they have co-developed and presented Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisor trainings for licensed clinicians throughout Washington while also providing group supervision for post-graduate associates pursuing licensure. Together, they bring more than 60 years of combined experience as counselor educators, clinical supervisors, private practitioners, authors, and national and international presenters.

Known for their engaging, high-energy teaching style, Drs. McBride and Ward integrate academic scholarship with decades of experience in clinical practice, clinical supervision, and counselor and marriage and family therapy education to create an interactive learning environment that is professional, approachable, and intellectually stimulating. Their teaching emphasizes transparency, authenticity, thoughtful discussion, and practical application while fostering a collaborative and reflective learning experience. The training equips supervisors with the knowledge and skills to strengthen supervisees' clinical judgment while enhancing their multicultural competence, ethical decision-making, and professional identity.

Kim McBride, Ph.D., LMFT, is the founder and Clinical Director of Envision Counseling and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and Washington State Approved Clinical Supervisor. She earned her master’s degree in psychology, with an emphasis in Child, Couple, and Family Therapy, from Antioch University Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, specializing in Couple Therapy, from Northcentral University. Dr. McBride is also a counselor educator whose supervision philosophy is supervisee-centered, systemic, and outcomes-focused. She integrates Developmental and Bowen Family Systems Theory to cultivate ethical decision-making, clinical competence, professional identity, and the self-awareness necessary for independent practice.

Colin C. Ward, Ph.D., LMHC, has more than 30 years of experience as a counselor educator, clinician, clinical supervisor, mentor, author, and national and international presenter. He earned his M.S. in Counseling from Winona State University and his Ph.D. in Counseling from Oregon State University. He is emeritus faculty at Antioch University Seattle, having served in a variety of leadership positions within the university and professional community.

Dr. Ward was trained in the traditions of Brief Therapy, grounded in the humanistic ideals of respect, responsibility, openness, and humility. He has co-authored books for both clinicians (Resilient Centered Counseling, 2023) and supervisors (Supervision at the Crossroad, 2026), reflecting an unequivocal belief in the self-healing nature of others while emphasizing a developmental, resilience-centered, reflective, and collaborative partnership with clients, supervisees, and colleagues.

He has noted, “To courageously listen, to hear strength in stories of despair, to appreciate the unfolding nature in us all, and to believe in the human spirit in such a way that change is not only possible, but inevitable—to listen in this way is far more than accessing a shelf of techniques; it is a way of being with others that is often neglected in counselor training.
