Whether you are seeking help as an individual or couple, I want to work with you in exploring what you feel and think so that you can better understand yourself and your relationships. Couples often have communication problems that seem to repeat without resolution. Understanding the reasons for these cycles can help you develop the ability to get unstuck. Individual therapy can help you deal with depression and anxiety. This can include coping with such issues as difficult life transitions, lack of meaning, low self-esteem, shame, or surviving child abuse.
I have decades of experience including continuing education on up-to-date aspects of therapy. I integrate therapy approaches according to what might be most helpful to you. I have extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, a scientifically pr0ven treatment for couples. I like diversity and enjoy working with adults from different backgrounds who are dealing with a variety of issues. I prefer working in a warm, informal style in which we talk with each other about your concerns, whether they are long-term or transitional.
We can meet on a regular basis or as needed for a "tune up." I am licensed to work with people in GA and WA State. I provide therapy online. I find that meeting with you in your world can help you feel more comfortable and can be more convenient for you.

“So often life can be hard to navigate on your own. It is my hope to teach you tools and skills to make life feel more balanced. I have a deep passion for people and cherish each person’s journey and story. Sharing your story is powerful in its vulnerability and often that is where the healing begins. Collaboratively, we will develop therapeutic goals that I will help support you in achieving. With a growth mindset, I believe in people’s ability to change and heal. I look forward to assisting you in developing techniques that will specifically help you achieve your goals.” 316 W BOONE AVE STE 656

I offer telehealth and in person appointments at my office on north Capitol Hill. Generally, my work focuses on psychodynamic and somatic approaches to trauma, including parts work, Polyvagal-informed therapy, and EMDR. I have extensive experience working with queer folks of all kinds, neurodivergence, relational abuse (DV, narcissistic abuse, sexual abuse), childhood attachment traumas, and incorporating spirituality into therapy. Specific niche populations I love to work with are gay and lesbian survivors of conversion therapy, folks of uncommon trans experience (eg. those who desisted or detransitioned, those who transitioned long ago and still live with gender dysphoria), and deconstruction of harms from religion in even mainline/liberal denominations. I provide clinical consultation on all of these topics, especially how to incorporate Polyvagal theory into therapeutic practice. I also enjoy supervising associates who do either similar or different work compared to my work (my own supervisor was an LMFT, and I find we can learn a lot from therapists with different approaches!) 1127 10th AVE E, Suite 3

John earned his Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at Whitworth University. After receiving his undergraduate degree in 2006 from Montana State University, John was a journalist for 15 years. He uses his sincere, inquisitive interest of the human experience in the therapy setting to treat adolescents, adults, couples, and families living with shame, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, addiction, and life transitions and questions. Trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and the Circle of Security Core Sensitivities and Parenting for individuals and families, John believes that every person has inherent attachment wounds and behaves accordingly to protect those uncomfortable vulnerabilities. By addressing underlying emotions, he feels privileged to hear clients’ life stories while sitting with them in their pain to begin the process of healing. Anxiety Life Transitions Psychotherapy Women's Issues
The journey to motherhood does not always go quite as expected. Sometimes new mothers, or those seeking to become mothers, need additional support in navigating the challenges that they might face along the way.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor serving clients across the state of Washington, exclusively through a secure telehealth platform. I have spent nearly 20 years focused on meeting the therapeutic needs of women in their reproductive years, including treatment of the life transitions, and developmental and emotional challenges related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
As a client of mine, you will receive individualized, compassionate care in a safe and confidential environment. I utilize a holistic approach to help address your current symptoms, and identify the core causes of your difficulties. This involves partnering with you to examine how your psychological and emotional needs, relationships, physical health, and lifestyle all contribute to your overall state of well-being.
Perinatal and postpartum counseling includes things such as: preconception counseling; prenatal parenting; mindful pregnancy practices; perinatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders; preparing abuse survivors for birth; grief and loss, including challenges with fertility, miscarriage, and neonatal loss; birth trauma resolution; and the adjustment to parenthood.
I have served as both Vice-Chair and Advisory Committee Member for Postpartum Support International of Washington, (now known as Perinatal Support Washington), and as Washington State Coordinator for Postpartum Support International. In 2010, I was primary author for the revised edition of the book, Beyond the Birth: A Family's Guide to Postpartum Mood Disorders. Supplementing my work as a therapist, I am both a Certified HypnoBirthing® Childbirth and Fertility Educator, a Gottman Bringing Baby Home Educator, and have training in Birth Story Listening (Birthing From Within).
Despite my focus on perinatal and postpartum issues, I continue to devote a small portion of my practice to addressing a variety of other concerns impacting individual adults, and invite you to contact me if you think I might be of assistance. Chrysalis Counseling Services PLLC

I counsel individuals aged 15 and up using Emotionally Focused Therapy as well as Brainspotting (like EMDR). I am not currently treating children but I do offer parenting help. I love helping clients get to the root of the obstacles they are facing, so that they can move towards healing and healthy relationships. I use a strengths-based, attachment-focused, trauma-informed and collaborative approach, recognizing that it is not easy to talk to someone new about your life and that seeking counseling is a courageous step! For those seeking faith-based counseling, I base my clinical training on a Christian foundation of Scripture and my personal faith.
